All is well. Is all well?

Today feels like a normal Sunday, and didn't feel like a normal Sunday.

Normal:

  • We tried a deliciously buttery and flaky croissant from a place in Five Dock. It seems to be run by a Korean family. I hope they will survive the coronavirus’ impact on retail and hospo industry.  Having croissant seems like a last bit of luxury before the world ends.
  • We made delicious kale pie after tasting a slice from Ramsgate Market yesterday
  • We also made delicious Italian/Spanish/French mushroom dish with salami, fresh shitake, garlic and tomatoes. T was saying this is a meal that can get us through the next few months if things get worse because we have so much tinned tomatoes, the salami was from a stash that’s been building in the past 2 years and the mushrooms are free.
  • We ate lunch (see above) outside in the sun, which was absolutely splendid and relaxing. Then we ate a cherry pie, bought from Ramsgate, for dessert. Yum!
  • We had T's mum and her best friend over for a quick supper

Not normal:

  • We got up at 6:30am to go to the Meat Emporium, only to find their freezer section completely utterly (no kidding) empty.  They sold out of their chicken. And sections of the store filled up with root vegetables and eggs to hide the lack of stock.
When we spoke to the butcher behind the counter, he said that on Friday they had ordered 800kg of chicken. But only 300kg arrived, and they were gone in 2 hours.  This is madness!

  • After the Meat Emporium, we went to Coles to do our shopping. There were limits on things like canned tomatoe, long life milk etc. Because T and I were shopping together, we gamed the system and bought our maximums per person and went to check out separately. There is a little bit of guilt because I’m thinking about the old and vulnerable individuals who can only shop for themselves and can’t compete against people like us.  I feel bad, but I also need to survive/quench my anxiety.
  • We also went to Burwood. The fresh grocery prices were ridiculous. $9/kg for capsicum! There weren’t any Asian greens which are usually quite cheap. None at all.

Gratitude: continual gratitude for our little backyard, for our herb garden which provides us
